EDISON - A stretch of Route 1 will be shut down in Edison this weekend for construction.
Route 1 will be closed in both directions between the area just north of Old Post Road and south of Middlesex County Route 531 (Main Street). NJDOT officials say the work will be done to revamp rail lines that span the thoroughfare. Once completed, the new grade should last for decades.
Detours for northbound and southbound drivers will provide access to businesses and other destinations on either side of the construction zone, according to township officials. But drivers should plan alternate routes if possible and expect delays along the posted detour routes.
The DOT estimates that 40,000 to 45,000 vehicles drive that stretch of Route 1 in a single day.
Work began at 9 p.m. Friday and is expected to finish up at around 5 a.m. Monday.
