Major brush fire near The Meadowlands extinguished along Turnpike

CARLSTADT - A large six-alarm brush fire has been put out along the New Jersey Turnpike near MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands.

Firefighters are still at the scene dousing some hot spots.

Thick, black smoke could be seen from the Turnpike. Firefighters from Carlstadt, East Rutherford, and Wood-Ridge worked to battle the blaze. Firefighters were able to gain control over the flames around 6:15 p.m.

No homes were in immediate danger due to the fire. The fire burned 60 acres in The Meadowlands, officials say.

The northbound western spur on the New Jersey Turnpike was closed for several hours, but has been reopened.
