KEYPORT - A large fire injured seven firefighters and damaged several businesses in Keyport.

The fire broke out inside a building and warehouse on the 40th block of West Front Street Friday afternoon. The first floor of the building was abandoned, but there were some apartments on the upper floors.

After several hours, crews from more than a dozen fire agencies were able to get the majority of the fire under control, but then had to deal with an active gas leak.

The fire spread to two other buildings and damaged five businesses in the area.

The Red Cross is helping at least three families who were displaced by the fire. Officials say at least three pets died in the blaze as well.

Fire crews remained on the scene overnight to monitor hotspots. Neighbors were only allowed back on West Front Street early Saturday morning.

The seven firefighters who were taken to a hospital all suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

The Keyport First Aid Squad is accepting water bottle donations, as the borough's fire department says crews used much of its drinking water supply.
