SOMERSET - A Somerset County principal is going to great heights to get his students to read.

Principal Bill Grippo climbed to the rooftop at Macafee Road School in Somerset Tuesday afternoon and vowed to spend the night up there.

Grippo says he's just holding up his end of the bargain after students read more than 20,000 books this year.

"Without reading, there is no freedom, and it's all about literacy," he says. "So we do whatever it is to really make these kids really get excited."

The principal says on average, the students read 45 books each this school year.

Principal Grippo set up a bed on the roof and started his campout at 8 p.m. Tuesday. He greeted students when they arrived for school Wednesday morning.
