EWING - Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno says she has some concerns about Gov. Chris Christie’s proposed budget for New Jersey, which is set to be unveiled next week.

Guadagno says that she has expressed uncertainty about paying for Christie’s pledged drug initiatives.

“The budget is going to be tight. It always is a challenge, especially when we do have different priorities,” she says. “The governor does want to set aside quite a bit…on the heroin epidemic, and the question is where does that money come from?”

Guadagno is running for governor to replace Christie when his term is up in January. She has been distancing herself from him lately and highlighting their differences.

As lieutenant governor, Guadagno is in charge of industries like travel and tourism. She says that she does not want to see cuts to those areas in the budget.

“We’re always curious to make sure we stay at least flat-funded in terms of those areas because they mean a lot of jobs in New Jersey,” she says.

Guadagno often covers community events that the governor is not able to make. Her husband, a Monmouth County judge, claimed this week that she has served more than 500 days as governor when Christie was indisposed.

“I think [my husband’s] exaggerating,” she says.

If Christie had accepted a job in the U.S Department of Labor, as he reportedly was offered last week by President Donald Trump, Guadagno would have taken over.

Some political experts say that Christie’s low approval rating may work against Guadagno’s campaign.

Christie will deliver his final budget address this coming Tuesday.
