LONG BRANCH - Two towering eyesores could soon be coming down in Long Branch, but the redevelopment plan is being met with opposition.

The oceanfront Sea View Towers have been empty and an eyesore for years, and the owner plans to demolish them to build luxury condos.

The proposed high-rise would have 100 units, indoor and outdoor pools, underground parking and a gym. But some say the area has seen too much new construction and doesn't need more.

"Take them down and do something nice like a park or something like that," says Ellen Finnegan. "We don't need any more upscale anything around here."

Residents are concerned that new construction would block the view from across the street. The new high-rise would be 12 stories if the plan is approved. The current buildings are seven and a half stories.

There's also concern about traffic and parking, but the attorney for the property owner, Daniel Cronheim, says the new proposal will include more parking - including 55 new public spaces.

Realtors say there is a demand for more condos on the oceanfront, and the new building would be appealing to New York commuters.

In order for the project to move forward, the owner would need three variances from the City of Long Branch.

The buildings have most recently been used as the scene of an anti-terrorism drill.
