LONG BRANCH - A veteran Long Branch police officer and a young couple will forever be connected after the officer helped to deliver the couple’s baby during Thursday’s snowstorm.
According to Long Branch police, the couple was on their way to the hospital when the father got lost. He decided to pull over along Memorial Parkway near Broadway in Long Branch at around 1:30 p.m. and call 911.
Patrolman Joe Grazziano was the first person to respond. He tells News 12 New Jersey that when he arrived the baby was already crowning. He told the mother to push and shortly he was holding the newborn baby girl in his arms. He also drove the ambulance to the hospital while EMTs rode in the back to take care of the mother and her baby.
Grazziano says this is the first baby he has delivered in his 20 years in law enforcement.
Long Branch Police Lt. Thomas Shea says he will recommend Grazziano for a commendation.
News 12 New Jersey is also told the mother and baby are doing well at Monmouth Medical Center.
