Long Branch fire chief: Monday's blaze largest in recent history

LONG BRANCH - Several people are homeless today after a massive multi-alarm fire destroyed a three-story building in Long Branch.

Officials say no injuries were reported in the blaze, which broke out around 11 a.m. yesterday in a building on Brighton Avenue near Ocean Boulevard.

Long Branch Fire Chief Kevin Hayes called the fire "the largest fire in recent history and certainly since the pier burned in 1987."

Officials say about a dozen people lived in the apartment building, which housed several businesses on its ground floor that were also destroyed.
