Local rowers help clean up Passaic River

KEARNY - Today marked the third straight year that Kearny High School senior Fernanda Lois rallied crew teams that row on the Passaic River together to pull trash from the river and its banks.

With the recent floods also came mounds of garbage and more than 200 students from Hudson and Essex counties took part in the cleanup, removing a refrigerator, shopping cart and a car bumper.

The cleanup will continue even after Lois graduates from high school this year, as she found a sponsor in Christopher Brooks, of Kearny, back when she was a freshman.
