Linden store owner throws hot oil on would-be robber

LINDEN - A man who tried to rob a Linden deli may have gotten away, but it's likely he wasn't unscathed.

The owner of Cos's Corner Deli on East Elizabeth Avenue told police a man in his 20s entered the store with a gun just after 2 p.m. Monday and pushed his way behind the counter.

When the suspect tried to open the cash register, the owner threw hot water and then a small pot of boiling oil on him, according to Capt. James Sarnicki.

The suspect fled the store on foot empty-handed. The owner chased him out the door and down the street but was not able to catch him. The owner was not injured.

Linden police notified hospitals to look out for anyone who comes in with burns.

Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and asking anyone that recognizes the man to call police.
