LINDEN - A New Jersey high school football player who was captured on video apparently hitting an opponent with the opponent's helmet has been removed from the team.

In a statement Wednesday, Linden School Superintendent Danny Robertozzi says the school board is pursuing the "severest disciplinary measures permitted under law."

It happened Friday night when Linden High School played Immaculata High School at Linden's Tiger Stadium. Video showed a Linden defensive lineman apparently pulling the helmet off his opponent's head and hitting the player with it in the forehead.

A referee penalized the Linden player for unsportsmanlike conduct and the Immaculata player was taken to a hospital, where he received 10 stitches for a contusion.

Robertozzi called the action "brutal."

The board says it cannot comment on the disciplinary action.

Linden police say the police department's juvenile bureau is investigating. The names of the juveniles have not yet been released.
