WEEHAWKEN - The Port Authority is planning a large scale rehab project on the inbound approach of the Lincoln Tunnel.

The helix will only be closed during overnight hours this summer. Port Authority crews will work from 10:30 p.m. until 5 a.m. on weekdays and until 9 a.m. on weekends.

The project is the most significant repair project on the approach in 70 years. Drivers will be able to use local roads to access the tunnel during the project, as the tunnel itself will remain open, even during construction hours. However, the Port Authority has not yet determined the exact detour route traffic will be re-routed through on the local streets of Weehawken.

The $88 million project is expected to begin Aug. 1 and last at least a year. The Port Authority will then begin repair work on the outbound side.

The helix has been feeding traffic into the Lincoln Tunnel since 1938.
