SOUTH ORANGE - Heavy rain and lightning rolled through the area for the second night in a row Thursday, as residents took cover again.

The rain came down in sheets and the lightning lit up the sky in places like South Orange, where commuters arriving at the train platform dashed into the deluge.

Driving became treacherous as the rain challenged windshield wipers to keep up. With visibility diminished, holiday traffic slowed considerably on some roadways.

Heavy winds and lightning strikes downed trees, taking out wires and knocking out power to thousands.
