CLARK - Lawmakers in Trenton are debating whether or not to lengthen the school calendar, but appear torn on the issue.

Many parents are ready to see their kids go back to class, and some students say they are excited to start the school year.

Sixth-grader James Gocel says he enjoys summer, but sees value in the school year regardless of when it starts. "To me they're both equal. Because in school I get to do some fun projects and talk to my friends and in summer I get to go to fun places," he says.

Earlier this year, Gov. Chris Christie said he wanted to spend $5 million on a pilot program to extend the school day and year, but it was cut during the budget crisis in June.
