EDISON - Folk legend and New Jersey resident Richie Havens has died.
Havens, best known for his appearances at Woodstock in 1969, was still performing 40 years later.
The legendary singer was born in Brooklyn, but lived in Jersey City. He was also a painter, sculptor and maintained a gallery in Hoboken.
Havens described his own musical style as unique. "I'm a song singer, that's the only way I could ever describe myself," Havens told News 12 New Jersey's John Bathke in 2005.
The artist last performed three years ago following kidney surgery from which he never fully recovered.
