LAMBERTVILLE - A popular playground in Lambertville is off-limits after reports showing potential dangers forced it to be closed.

Cavello Park, located on the Delaware and Raritan Canal, has been a popular gathering spot in Lambertville for decades.

When the city was preparing to put in new playground equipment, soil tests revealed lead and beryllium. Both can be hazardous, especially to the very young. The playground is designed for children ages 4 to 7.

The park is located on what was industrial property through the 1950s, which may be the source of contamination.

A foot of soil will be removed and new dirt brought in, closing the park for six months.

Officials say the contamination was just above levels considered safe for residential areas.
