NEWARK - The planned layoffs of Newark police officers and firefighters were averted yesterday after a full day of bargaining and last-minute negotiations.

A state Superior Court judge ordered a 10-day delay in the scheduled layoffs of more than 150 police officers.

Yesterday, a union lawyer said a settlement had been reached to save the jobs of 24 Newark firefighters targeted for layoffs.

The city released a statement on the Superior Court's ruling that said "Today's ruling will further delay impending layoffs and presents severe financial consequences to the taxpayers in our city. These layoffs are an unfortunate and unavoidable consequence of a national economic crisis, but necessary to maintain the City's fiscal integrity."
