NEWARK - A shooting at Los Angeles International Airport has caused a ripple effect throughout the country, delaying and canceling flights, including at Newark Liberty International Airport.

Police say a lone gunman, identified as 23-year-old Paul Ciancia, of Pennsville, New Jersey, was armed with a semi-automatic rifle and opened fire at LAX shortly before 9:30 a.m. Authorities say he killed a TSA worker and wounded at least three others. He is in custody, but flights were disrupted nationwide.

Many travelers arriving in Newark were in the air when the shooting occurred and were unaware of what had happened.

The incident resulted in dozens of delays and diversions at Newark. Many flights to and from the Brick City were already experiencing weather-related delays due to high winds.

Niloo Eskandari is in town to run in Sunday's New York City Marathon. His flight from LAX took off just 30 minutes before the shooting began. He learned what happened via text message when he landed. "I was upset to hear that, but I was glad that I made it before they closed the airport and before it happened," he says.

Airport officials say operations in Newark may experience residual delays for the time being.
