NEWARK - (AP) -- The final legal chapter of Newark's notorious 2007 schoolyard murders is scheduled to begin this week.
Prospective jurors met today for a civil trial stemming from the murder of three college-bound friends behind the Mount Vernon School.
The victims' families allege the school district created a dangerous condition by leaving the schoolyard's gates open when it knew security cameras and sensor lights weren't working. They also claim the schoolyard was a regular gathering place for gang members.
Iofemi Hightower, Dashon Harvey and Terrance "T.J." Aeriel were slain execution-style. They were enrolled or planning to enroll at Delaware State University.
Six men and boys charged in the attacks have pleaded guilty or been convicted.
