JERSEY CITY - A man who was shot by a Jersey City police officer Tuesday has died from his injury, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office.

Assistant Prosecutor Gene Rubino says Lavon King, 20, had open arrest warrants in Superior Court and Jersey City Municipal Court. King was first observed on Kearney Avenue at around 4:30 p.m. One officer pursued him on foot, and another in a police vehicle.

King allegedly fled through several backyards on Ege Avenue, eventually entering an unlocked shed. Police say King struggled with one of the officers, trying to disarm him.

The officer fired one shot, striking King in the chest. The suspect was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just before 9 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation by the prosecutor's office.
