NEWARK - The Newark City Council unanimously passed a new law tonight requiring late-night restaurants in the Brick City to have armed guards.

The measure is intended to keep Newark residents safe. The ordinance will put an armed guard in every late-night restaurant in the city, with most of them being off-duty Newark police officers.

Any restaurant with a seating capacity under 15 will be required to provide the security after 9 p.m. Restaurants that don't have guards will be forced to close at 10 p.m.
