ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP - With only four shopping days left until Christmas, New Jersey residents were out grabbing those last-minute gifts.

With Thanksgiving falling later in November, the holiday shopping season was shorter this year, and retailers are trying to make up for the loss in revenue.

Many area malls are willing to accommodate the procrastinators with great deals and extended hours.

Rockaway Townsquare Mall is open late all weekend and in the days leading up to Christmas Eve.

A recent online survey by Harris Interactive said about one in five people hadn't started their shopping a week ago.

Many shoppers prefer to shop online and some say they enjoy waiting and shopping with the crowds. "It's tradition," says William Baumgartner. "I think for a lot of people it's not really waiting till the last minute. It's that feeling you get, you're out with people. You're shopping."

Some stand-alone stores are ending the holiday shopping season the way they started, with marathon shopping hours.

Kohl's is opening for five days from 6 a.m. Friday morning through 6 p.m. Christmas Eve for the first time.

Macy's, Toys R Us, and Kmart are among those opening some of their stores for 80 to 100 hours ahead of Christmas.
