MONROE - The largest menorah in New Jersey, which is also an exact replica of the National Menorah at the White House, was lit Wednesday evening in Monroe.

Dozens gathered to commemorate the start of Hanukkah.

Just before the honorary lighting of the first of eight candles Rabbi Eliezer Zaklikovsky reminded the crowd that the menorah is lit at the site of a historic battle.

"Having this menorah here reminds us of that mission," Zaklikovsky says. "The end the Battle of Monmouth ultimately brought about our country and the freedom we have to celebrate our religion in the open."

Hanukkah began Wednesday at sundown and lasts through Dec. 5.
