NEWARK - A fire that broke out at a home in Newark has displaced eight families.

The fire started just before 4 p.m. Monday at the three-story, multifamily home located at 214 Bergen St. Due to the size of the fire and heavy winds in the area, the fire spread to two neighboring homes.

At least two of the homes were occupied at the time of the fire, so residents were evacuated for their safety.

The fire became so intense that parts of the homes collapsed. Crews were pulled from inside the homes and continued to fight the fire from the outside.

A few firefighters were treated for minor injuries and smoke inhalation. None of the residents were hurt.

Members of the American Red Cross responded to help assist the families with food, clothing and temporary shelter.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
