Landmark LBI attraction works to pull itself out of bankruptcy

BEACH HAVEN - A landmark beach attraction is pulling out all the stops to pull itself out of bankruptcy. The Surflight Theatre has entertained audiences in the summer resort town of Beach Haven on Long Beach Island (LBI) for 60 years and is the only professional theater in the area.

This summer, the Surflight is sharing its stage with "Catch a Rising Star." The comedy chain is putting on stand-up shows and concerts Monday nights, with appearances by Richard Belzer and Bucky Pizzarelli, as well as other entertainers who are working for free or reduced rates.

Surflight is crashing under $4 million in debt and filed bankruptcy six months ago. Now under new management, the non-profit has presented a repayment plan to creditors in hopes it will re-emerge in October.
