LAKEWOOD - Officials in Lakewood have announced they have applied for a federal grant to help them fight a rising gang problem.

The grant, valued at $750,000, would allow the town to create programs to help keep children from joining gangs, according to town officials.

To get the funding, the town must show that various community organizations are working together to help prevent children from joining gangs.

Officials say if the grant is approved, the funding will be put to use by the end of this year, or beginning of next year.
