NEWARK - State officials are charging 25 companies with working as movers without licenses after a four-day sting last week.

Undercover investigators from the state Division of Consumer Affairs contacted 25 moving companies through Craigslist and other websites and asked them to move items out of a storage facility in Bridgewater.

Among those that showed up were two with drivers who had suspended licenses, one in an unregistered truck and one driving a P.C. Richard and Son truck that the company said he was not authorized to use.

State officials said they received hundreds of complaints about unlicensed movers who allegedly take advantage of customers.

The companies are being fined up to $2,500 each. Any companies that get moving licenses within a month can have their fines reduced.
