EDISON - The Port Authority told a U.S. senator there was no traffic study to justify the closures at the George Washington Bridge in September.

A month ago, Sen. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, the head of the Transportation Committee, sent the Port Authority a letter asking them to answer nine questions about the decision to close those toll lanes in Fort Lee.

The Port Authority answered, and says two former executives appointed by Gov. Chris Christie, David Wildstein and Bill Baroni, acted alone.

In testimony to the Assembly Transportation Committee, Baroni defended the lane closures. "Every one of you, every one of you on this committee has people in your communities who sit in longer traffic every day because of the special lanes for Fort Lee," he said.

In the letter, the Port Authority says, "It does not appear that Mr. Baroni sought approval within the Port Authority for his testimony. The Board did not review or approve Mr. Baroni's appearance before the Assembly Committee."

Sen. Rockefeller says the Port Authority's responses show there is "zero evidence" of a legitimate reason to close the lanes and calls the action "unconscionable."
