UNION CITY - Former Union City Police Chief Charles Everett, who resigned in the middle of a Kane In Your Corner investigation into his alleged low-show job with the Board of Education, will be getting a huge final payout from taxpayers.

Union City Mayor Brian Stack confirms the city has agreed to a settlement that would pay Everett $284,326.72 for unused sick, vacation and comp time. Stack says he agreed to a settlement on the advice of an accountant and law firm.

"The report has come back saying we should pay the chief for the time that we owe him," Stack said. "Contractually, we're obligated to do so."

Stack says under the settlement, the city can pursue a claim against Everett if he is charged with a crime. Everett is currently under investigation by the New Jersey attorney general.

Union City also released an internal police memo showing how the department has addressed problems Kane In Your Corner exposed with off-duty detail work.

Everett stepped down after News 12 New Jersey's cameras caught him working out at the gym while he was billing the Board of Education $60 an hour to guard an athletic field.
