ROXBURY - More than two dozen unlicensed moving companies have been busted by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs in an undercover sting, and Kane In Your Corner was there as the operation unfolded.

“Operation Mother’s Attic” focused on moving companies that operated online on sites like Craigslist. The 26 companies busted face civil penalties of $2,500 apiece. Two also face federal penalties of $25,000 apiece for performing interstate moves without the permission of the US Department of Transportation. Two moving company employees were also arrested on outstanding warrants by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.

Some of the moving company owners caught in the sting told Kane In Your Corner they did not know New Jersey required moving companies to be licensed for local, in-state moves. But Eric Kanefsky, director of the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, is skeptical. “In many cases, in their online posting, in their advertising, they were saying ‘We are licensed, we are insured, we are an LLC corporation’ when in many cases those representations turned out not to be true.”
