KEANSBURG - An early morning fire today in Keansburg has left dozens of people homeless.
Officials say the fire started at a huge residential development that neighbors say stood vacant for years. Once the fire started, it caused a chain reaction of damage that destroyed a nearby condo across the street.
The entire neighborhood was coated with ash following the fire and the cleanup is still under way.
Neighbors say it was the biggest fire they'd ever seen and that flames measured over 100 feet tall. The heat was so intense that it caused cars parked across the street to explode and burn down to their frames.
No one was hurt.
Keansburg Deputy Police Chief Michael Pigott says firefighters did the best they could to keep it from spreading, but the wind didn't help.
