UNION CITY - A police chief in one of New Jersey's largest cities is getting paid $60 an hour to work out at the gym, and you're paying for it.
A Kane In Your Corner investigation found Union County Police Chief Charles Everett is earning an extra $45,000 a year working off-duty security "details." He is supposed to be providing security at the Jose Marti Field from 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. on Friday nights and from 4 p.m. - midnight on Saturdays. But Kane in Your Corner videotaped Everett working less than two hours of a four-hour shift and less than five hours of an eight-hour shift. He arrived late, left early and even worked out at the police gym during hours he billed to the Board of Education. And since the Union City School District is considered an Abbott District, every taxpayer in the state is paying for it.
Former Deputy Police Chief Joe Blaettler says Everett has been getting away with this practice for years. Everett refused to answer any questions about his detail work. Union City Mayor Brian Stack says he was shocked by what the Kane in Your Corner investigation found and promised to look into it.
