Juvenile detention officer killed, another injured in Newark

NEWARK - Police are investigating a double shooting in Newark overnight that left one juvenile corrections officer dead and another injured.

Officials say the two victims were corrections officers at the Union County Juvenile Detention Center. The men were shot outside a bar near the corner of Mulberry and Green streets.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says both victims were taken to University Hospital after the shooting. Quinton Brown, 23 of Hillside, was pronounced dead a short while later. The second man, 22-year-old Theolander Abney, of Plainfield, remains in critical condition.

Investigators say they believe the victims were targeted.

The shootings come after a 36-day stretch without a homicide in Newark.
