Jury selection today for cop accused of punching teen

NEWARK - Jury selection is expected to begin today for the Newark cop accused of punching a teenager last year.

A video captured by a security camera shows Newark Detective Angel Pared punching 15-year-old Travis Rattray. Rattray's family also claimed the teen was pushed into a window and had hair ripped from his head.

After seeing the videotape, a grand jury indicted Pared on four counts including aggravated assault, use of excessive force, official misconduct and tampering with public records for allegedly lying in police reports.

A lawyer for the detective called the indictment a rush to judgment, saying his client was never called to testify before the grand jury. The lawyer also said that it was Rattray who made the first move and that the officer simply tried to subdue him.
