NEWARK - Jury selection began today in the trial of one of six men and boys charged in the Newark schoolyard slayings.
Alexander Alfaro is the second suspect to go to trial. Rodolfo Godinez was convicted last year, and admitted triggerman Melvin Jovel pleaded guilty in November.
Both received three consecutive life sentences.
Alfaro was one of three juveniles at the time of the attack that left three dead behind the Mount Vernon School in Newark on Aug. 4, 2007.
Prosecutors said the victims were lined up against a wall and shot execution-style. A fourth victim survived and is expected to testify against Alfaro.
An appeals court ruled in October that statements Alfaro and another juvenile made to police were admissible. The third juvenile's statements were thrown out.
