TOMS RIVER - (AP) - A judge has stopped a Jersey shore townfrom continuing its policy of allowing prayers council meetings.

Point Pleasant Beach's council has said the Lord's Prayer beforeits meetings for years. But a resident complained and the AmericanCivil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit this fall.

The council stopped the practice and replaced it with a momentof silence. It then adopted a policy that let individual councilmembers make an invocation of their choosing. Some have opted torecite prayers.

State Superior Court Judge Vincent Grasso issued a preliminaryinjunction Friday stopping the policy while the lawsuit proceeds.

The lawsuit has sharply divided opinion in the one-square-mileshore town.
