NEWTON - A Hopatcong man who pleaded guilty last month to two counts of interference of custody was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison.

Kristopher Dohm, 38, sparked a nationwide search when his ex-wife reported that he had fled New Jersey with their two young sons.

Dohm told his ex-wife, Sandra Dohm, that he was taking their sons, then ages 7 and 8, on a trip to Nevada. She reported the children as missing when they failed to return as planned.

Dohm and his sons were found a few weeks later at a motel in New Port Richey, Florida, along with a fugitive wanted in Tennessee on sex charges.

The father admitted that he had shaved the boys' heads to try and conceal their identities.

Dohm and his ex-wife divorced in 2012 and had shared joint custody of their children without incident until Feb. 3, 2015.

Dohm faced up to 20 years behind bars. He’ll serve his sentence, with approximately two years credited for time served, in state prison. He will be eligible for parole in a year.

Before sentencing, he voluntarily agreed to have no contact with his sons until they turn 18.
