NEWARK - (AP) - A judge has given police, fire and cityemployees in Orange a short reprieve from threatened layoffs.
State Superior Court Judge Patricia Costello gave the partiesuntil Tuesday morning to continue negotiating. About 50 workers hadbeen scheduled for layoffs on Friday.
A lawsuit was filed Thursday on behalf of workers' unions.
The lawsuit says the loss of police and firefighters can endanger residents, and claims city officials failed to have meaningful discussions with employee unions before submitting a layoff plan.
Orange Mayor Eldridge Hawkins Jr. said Thursday that unions canavert the layoffs by agreeing to contractual concessions. He said aruling temporarily blocking the layoffs "would only delay theinevitable.
