LODI - The man charged with shooting his 85-year-old grandmother in Lodi appeared in a Hackensack courtroom for the first time this morning.

A Superior Court judge entered a not-guilty plea on behalf of Joseph Bariso. He was formally charged with attempted murder, hindering apprehension and a weapons offense. His bail was kept at $2 million.

It's not clear what sparked the shooting of Olga Bariso, which occurred early Sunday at her Union Street home. Bergen County prosecutors say she underwent surgery shortly after the shooting occurred and remains hospitalized in critical condition at Hackensack University Medical Center.

Prosecutors say Joseph Bariso, who also lived at the home, shot his grandmother with a handgun as she slept and then fled the residence. He was found around 1:15 p.m. Sunday walking on a street in Rutherford, but the weapon he allegedly used has not been recovered.
