NEWARK - Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting involving the Essex County Bureau of Narcotics at West Fourth Avenue and North Ninth Street in Newark.
Lead Detective Anthony Ambrose says Jose Quinonez, 22, was shot twice after he pulled a gun during a pursuit. Two sheriff's officers fired one bullet each.
Officials say the officers pulled up to a group of men while on a drug investigation, and Quinonez ran.
Ambrose says the gun has been recovered.
Witnesses say Quinonez was also bumped or hit by a police car on North Ninth Street before he was shot. Ambrose told News 12 New Jersey he did not believe Quinonez was struck by the car.
