BRICK - Democrat John Ducey has been elected the new mayor of Brick Township, defeating Republican rival Joe Sangiovanni.

Many people at the Jersey Shore were focused on the mayoral race after current Mayor Stephen Acropolis decided not to seek re-election.

The Ocean County community was hit hard by Superstorm Sandy, and recovery efforts have been the main issue in the race.

Mayor-elect John Ducey says his attention will be on getting people back into their homes.

Former Council President Sangiovanni recently returned to his home following the storm. His focus was on having the dunes rebuilt.

Taxes have been another big issue in the race. Ducey said he'd reduce the budget by eliminating eight department head jobs. Sangiovanni had planned to trim union contracts.

Brick is considered a Republican stronghold. However, Ducey's campaign recently picked up steam when he criticized Sangiovanni for his personal finances, which included a bankruptcy. Both sides raised significant money for their campaigns.
