WEEHAWKEN - A Weehawken resident is being hailed as a hero after he alerted his neighbors that their apartment building was on fire.

Joe Cimino, who lives two buildings away from 3510 Park Ave., saw that dark smoke was rising from the four-story apartment building. After calling the authorities, Cimino ran into the building and warned unaware tenants about the fire.

Two of the building’s 16 apartments suffered heavy damage while buildings on either side were spared.

The deputy fire chief says the fire appeared to have started in the kitchen of a third-floor apartment. The cause remains under investigation.

Cimino, a public works employee, says that he did not worry about his own safety during the incident.

“I just worry about people," he told News 12.
