FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP - Police are hoping surveillance camera footage of a jewel thief who stole a $70,000 ring from a store inside the Freehold Raceway Mall will lead to the suspect’s arrest.

The heist took place last Thursday afternoon at Giorgio's Fine Jewelry when a customer told store owner, Bill Avaz, he was interested in spending lavishly for his girlfriend’s engagement ring. When Avaz retrieved the ring for further examination, the suspect took it from his hands and bolted for the door.

The uninsured ring is a nearly three carat, high-quality, round-cut diamond flanked by even more diamonds in a setting of 18-karat white gold. Avaz is offering $5,000 to anyone with information leading to its return.

Freehold Township police say a getaway driver was waiting for the thief in a blue Chevy Malibu sedan. Anyone with information can call the Freehold Township Police Department at 732-462-7500.
