JERSEY CITY - A 20-month-old boy is recovering from critical injuries after falling from a third-story window in Jersey City.

The child was found lying on a concrete sidewalk below an open window at an apartment building at 323 Union St. around 10 p.m. Wednesday.

The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office says the child is in critical but stable condition with head and internal injuries at University Hospital.

The child's parents are not commenting on what happened, but the father told police he was in the kitchen making a meal. The boy was alone in a bedroom with an open window without protective bars. The father says he rushed out of the building when he heard his baby cry. The mother was not home at the time of the accident.

Neighbors say the boy is well-liked and they hope he pulls through.

The Department for Children and Families is investigating the incident.

In New Jersey, a family with a child under 10 can request in writing that the owner install child guards. The building superintendent says she hadn't received any such request since the family moved in six months ago.
