Jersey City sends layoff notices to 82 officers

JERSEY CITY - (AP) - New Jersey's second-largest city hassent layoff notices to 82 police officers and seven civilian policedepartment employees.

The Jersey Journal reports the Jersey City sent the noticesThursday. The layoffs are to take effect Feb. 15. A dozen othersupervisory police officers are to be demoted.

Officials say the layoffs are necessary to address the city'sfinancial woes.

Mayor Jerramiah Healy has said layoffs can be avoided if thepolice union agrees to contract concessions.

The union says there are other things the city can do toincrease revenues and offset costs. It's suggested increasing feesfrom developers who hire off-duty officers at construction sites.

Jersey City currently has 830 police officers.
