Jersey City residents band together for Typhoon Haiyan relief

JERSEY CITY - Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop and City Council President Rolando Lavarro Jr. will get together Thursday night to raise money for the victims of the Philippines typhoon.

A representative from the American Red Cross will also be on hand to collect money raised.

The event will be held from 6- 9 p.m. Thursday evening at the Porto Lounge, located at 286 First St. in Jersey City. Anyone who cannot attend the event but would like to donate may do so online or by sending a check to the nearest American Red Cross chapter.

Jersey City has a very large Filipino population, with 7 percent of its population having ties to the Philippines.
