Jersey City police look to head off summer crime wave

JERSEY CITY - More than 50 violent offenders have been arrested by Jersey City police in an effort to head off a summer crime wave.

Operation Summer Shield was designed to take violent offenders off the street ahead of the warmer months, when crime typically goes up.

Police targeted people with a history of violence, and gathered information over several months.

In one case, police found dozens of criminals using a residential apartment to operate a drug ring.
