JERSEY CITY - Authorities say an arrest has been made in connection to the shooting of a 5-year-old boy in Jersey City.

A 16-year-old city resident was arrested earlier this morning and charged with aggravated assault and weapons offenses, according to a spokesperson for the mayor's office.

"The police department worked aggressively and relentlessly to develop leads in this case and arrest the individual responsible," said Mayor Steven Fulop.

The shooting occurred at around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on Martin Luther King Drive.

A spokesperson at Jersey City Medical Center tells News 12 New Jersey that Jayden Thaxton is in "excellent" condition. The bullet, imbedded about 2 to 3 inches into Thaxton's abdomen, was removed.

"This situation is a horrible one on so many fronts, let alone that a 5-year-old child got shot by a stray bullet," says Fulop. "But you had a 16-year-old boy that basically ruined his own life and he's going to do some serious time. And it puts into perspective the gun issues that we have in this country."

Fulop says the shooting stemmed from an argument between two factions of teenagers, and Thaxton was struck by a stray bullet.

The victim is expected to be transferred to a hospital that specializes in pediatric care.
