JERSEY CITY - A Jersey City police officer was involved in a shooting Thursday morning, according to Jennifer Morill with the Department of Administration.

It happened before 1 a.m. along Ocean and Virginia avenues.

According to police, the officers were attempting to arrest the driver of a stolen vehicle when he resisted and tried to drive away, dragging and injuring an officer.

One of the officers discharged his weapon, striking the driver of the stolen vehicle.

The driver is described as a male in his mid-30s. He was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center, where he is being treated for gunshot wounds to his upper body and is listed in critical, but stable condition.

Both officers were transported to the hospital and released.
