JERSEY CITY - Mayor Steven Fulop ordered that a memorial to the man accused of killing Jersey City Officer Melvin Santiago be taken down.
Santiago was killed early Sunday morning while responding to an armed robbery call at a 24-hour Walgreens. Police say Lawrence Campbell ambushed the 23-year-old outside of the store. Police returned fire, killing Campbell.
Fulop's action was met with mixed responses from the community. Some residents say it's unfair because Campbell's family needs to mourn too.

However, the president of the Jersey City Police Benevolent Association says he agrees with the mayor's decision. He says heroes should be honored and calls Officer Santiago a hero.
The funeral for Officer Santiago is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. A wake for the officer will begin Thursday at 1 p.m. at the McLaughlin Funeral Home.
